Wilson-Covington proudly sponsored the Winston-Salem Chapter of Ducks Unlimited’s Banquet last Thursday, February 16th. Wilson-Covington is proud to be actively working in the hunting community by building a top-notch duck lodge in Eastern North Carolina and beginning construction on a competition-level skeet field in the Piedmont. Wilson-Covington’s VP of Operations, Hayes Wauford, is a 3-Time World Champion Skeet Shooter, hunter, and fisherman and many of the key employees of the company are avid outdoorsmen. This level of involvement in competitive shooting and outdoor sports makes Wilson-Covington the perfect choice when working on hunting lodges, fishing lodges, shooting clubs, and other conservation building projects.

Wilson-Covington has recently completed a kitchen remodel in Winston-Salem, NC. We worked closely with the homeowners to determine their ultimate aims and budget. With this established, we were able to pinpoint areas where their funds could best be used to dress up their existing kitchen. With an open floorplan and very nice cabinets existing, the areas of focus were the countertops, backsplash, and appliances. The overhead lighting was reworked to remove an existing large fluorescent fixture and go back with recessed cans to give a softer light. The existing cabinets were modified to accept new wall oven and microwave. Wallpaper was removed and sheetrock and painting work completed. The backsplash tile was installed by Wilson-Covington on a diamond pattern with mosaic accent tile above the range. A new undermount sink and faucet were installed. This project highlights how a home can be transformed in an economical fashion through careful planning and conversation between the owner and general contractor prior to beginning work. Following months of extensive demolition work, framing, siding, roofing, stucco, window installation, exterior trim work, and fighting off mosquitoes, black flies, and the occasional flock of geese, the crowning element of the “lighthouse” on the front facade of the lodge has been placed. Although exterior work is not complete, this marks a highlight in the process and now finish work will begin in earnest on the interior of the home. Wood finishes including many reclaimed beams, mahogany, and heart pine will serve to accent the open living area, kitchen, study, and bedrooms of the home. Upon inspecting the bathroom Wilson-Covington determined that there was most likely framing damage in the shower wall (due to the use of a plastic transition between the tile and tub rather than caulking) and in the floor (due to leaking wax ring at toilet). This framing repair was budgeted in the estimate for the work. After beginning demolition of the shower walls, our assumption proved correct:

Exterior restoration work included replacing much of the lower band due to termite damage and rot, replacing the majority of the siding, restoration of window sills and trim, and complete exterior paint. The louvers in the steeple had been removed over the years and boarded up with plywood. Wilson-Covington removed the plywood, examined the original paint lines, and constructed new louvers to match the original design. The existing asphalt shingle roof was removed, decking replaced as needed, and new interlocking metal shingles to match those originally on the church were installed.

The grade around the church was altered to shed water away from the hand-made brick foundation. A new ADA parking spot and access ramp were installed as well as new HVAC for the entire building. The electrical service was also reworked to bring power underground to the church and remove a weatherhead from the front facade of the building.

Interior work included removing the 1950s panelling from all walls, complete restoration of the original plaster finish, paint sampling for future reference and research, and refinishing the hardwood floors. The interior was painted and new carpet runners installed. In the basement of the church, a shelter was remodeled to have 2 bathrooms, a wash sink, and sufficient room to serve meals to those coming to the church.

Wilson-Covington is very proud to have played a role in the restoration of this valuable Winston-Salem landmark and would like to thank Preserve Historic Forsyth for their recognition. Reverend Laura Spangler, John Larson of Old Salem Museums and Gardens, and the entire congregation of the church made this a wonderful experience.

Wilson-Covington has recently completed the tenant upfit work for Quick Test at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, NC. This included all new interior finishes, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work. The timely completion of this project allowed Quick Test to open prior to their busy holiday season.

Wilson-Covington Construction is proud to have been hired to completely renovate a unique hunting lodge and vacation home in Eastern North Carolina. The project stems from the owner’s lifelong pursuit of waterfowl and includes an extensive collection of impoundments and hunting grounds that are being actively managed as waterfowl habitats.

The original structure was approximately 1,630 square feet with an additional 450 square feet of covered porches. In order to accommodate the owner’s needs and give ample room to host visiting hunters, Wilson-Covington has worked with the owner and Thomas Hughes Architecture to create a new 1-1/2 story, 3,682 square foot home. The existing structure was almost completely taken down to floor level and new pilings were driven on 3 sides of the home to expand the total footprint. The new design includes an additional 981 square feet of covered and/or screen porches, 4 bedrooms and open sleeping loft, 3 bathrooms, and an expansive living room, kitchen, study, and mud room to accommodate boots, waders, and wet dogs.

The highlight of the front facade is a ”lighthouse” constructed in the likeness of the observation tower (former smokestack) on the Lake Mattamuskeet Pumping Station. This will provide a 360 degree view of the surrounding lake and countryside and give a breathtaking view of the migration of snow geese, tundra swan, and ducks in the Eastern Flyway.
